Numbered plastic padlock seals are typically made entirely of plastic and are shaped like a standard padlock. Technically, they can be classified as fixed-length seals. They offer the same types of tamper-evident features as both variable-length and fixed-length seals-such as numbering, barcoding, and branding-but are suited to slightly different applications. The most common use for these seals is on airline duty-free trolleys. One reason for this is that plastic padlocks can be placed over a locking point just like a metal padlock to provide security, but they do not require a key to open. Instead, they are designed to be broken at a built-in break point using hands or a small pair of wire cutters. They are considered secure because the sequential numbering provides a reliable audit trail.
